It is so named because of its shape, resembling a large iron box. It is generally used as a beam or column in steel structures.
Specific drawings will vary. Some are #-shaped, with four sides extending outwards, others are like a square, and some are semi-enclosed. Therefore, processing box columns requires drawings, and some may require adding stiffeners inside the column. Some also use large rectangular tubes to replace box columns, but production capacity limitations often mean the required thickness cannot be achieved. Most box columns are submerged arc welded, with one of the three seams requiring special welding, which is more difficult. General steel structure factories in China can do this, but the quotes vary.
